Stratego: Quick Rules

LINK TO: COMPLETE GAME DESCRIPTION

Each team has a flag, and is assigned an adult leader who keeps their supply of chits and gives them out.  The object of the game is for each team to capture another team’s flag and also to capture as many chits of an opposing team as they can.

Each team hides their flag in their area and in plain sight. Their adult leader stays 20 feet away from the flag. These positions stay the same for the whole game.

After the first blow of the whistle, each team will have a short time to plan a strategy. When the whistle blows a second time, the game begins. Two blows of the whistle signals the end of the game. Anytime two whistles are heard, everyone has to come on the run to the game leader in the middle of the playing area.

As soon as possible, before the start of the game, the adult leader gives each player on their team a chit. Players are not to see their chit before getting it. The higher number chits capture the lower numbers except in the case of the Spy who can capture any officer (General, Colonel, Major, Captain, or Lieutenant.) The Engineer is the only rank that can capture the Bomb. The Bomb can capture every other chit except the Engineer.

In order to capture the chit of a player on an opposing team, one player must tag another. Both players show their chits and the higher chit then captures the lower. The lower chit is surrendered to the player with the higher chit and is kept by that player until turned into their team’s adult leader. The player who is now without a chit must go back to their adult leader, turn in any captured chits, and get supplied with another chit of their team’s color.

The first team presenting the game leader with an opposing team’s flag wins 25 points for his team. Each captured chit is worth one point.

If a player carrying an opposing team’s flag is tagged, he must stop and show their chit. If they ate captured, the flag can be returned to the same spot as before. If not captured, they can proceed to the game leader.

Play continues until a flag is turned into the game leader, a team runs out of chits, or the time limit is reached.  Any questions or problems should immediately be brought to the game leader for answers or solutions.
